New initiative equips residents with essential tools to control severe bleeding before first responders arrive

The City of Brampton is taking a proactive step in emergency preparedness by integrating Stop the Bleed kits into public facilities. As one of the first cities in Ontario to implement this initiative, Brampton aims to equip residents with essential tools to manage severe bleeding before first responders arrive. As part of the internationally recognized Stop the Bleed® program, these life-saving kits have been installed at City Hall, Cassie Campbell Community Centre, and Gore Meadows Community Centre as part of a pilot project. The goal is to assess their effectiveness and accessibility before expanding the program to additional locations, ensuring more residents have access to critical first-aid equipment.

Each kit contains crucial medical supplies, including a tourniquet specifically designed to control severe limb injuries by restricting blood flow. Other essential items include hemostatic gauze, compression bandages, and gloves, allowing bystanders to administer immediate assistance in life-threatening situations. Positioned next to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), these kits are strategically placed to ensure quick and easy access during emergencies.

The Stop the Bleed program was initiated following the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy and is led by the American College of Surgeons. The campaign focuses on providing training and resources that empower bystanders to take immediate action in bleeding emergencies, similar to how CPR is used in cases of cardiac arrest. Studies have shown that immediate intervention in cases of severe bleeding can significantly improve survival rates, making these kits a vital addition to public spaces.

In addition to installing these kits, the City of Brampton is encouraging residents to participate in Stop the Bleed training sessions. These workshops teach essential techniques, such as how to apply pressure, pack a wound, and use a tourniquet effectively.
