A routine overnight patrol in Caledon has led to multiple charges after officers uncovered a stolen vehicle fitted with 3D-printed licence plates, Ontario Provincial Police said.
The incident unfolded around 2:40 a.m. near Mayfield Road and Coleraine Drive, where officers noticed a vehicle with an obstructed licence plate. A black plastic cover had been placed over the plate, raising immediate concerns.
After stopping the vehicle, officers discovered that it had been previously reported stolen. Further inspection revealed that the licence plates attached to the vehicle were not legitimate; they had been produced by 3D printing.
Police have identified the accused as Gagandeep Singh (26), Tushar (24), and Sujal (21), all residents of Brampton.
Each individual has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. They are expected to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville at a later date.
Authorities emphasized that obstructing or altering licence plates can severely impact law enforcement efforts. Covered or fake plates make it difficult to identify vehicles, enforce traffic regulations, and investigate incidents such as collisions or criminal activity.
The use of 3D-printed plates, in particular, signals a growing tactic that could complicate roadside identification if left unchecked.
Investigators are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting their official website.
Those who provide information through Crime Stoppers remain anonymous, are not required to testify, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
